New Orleans won the trifecta this past weekend

Overheard at work today…

“We sure did win the trifecta this past weekend. New Orleans elected a new mayor without having to go to a run off, the Saints won the Super Bowl, and we’re in the thick of Mardi Gras. Its a fabulous time to be a New Orleanian right now!”

Indeed…

Anyone listening?

With all the Saints frenzy around town, and the simmering stew of Mardi Gras almost upon us, its no wonder no one is talking about the election

Election? What election?

Yeah, that one, the MAYOR OF NEW ORLEANS election

So if your SuperBowl-MardiGras plans have got you in a tizzy, and you are fretting about getting to the polls on February 9th and dodging Choctaw-Adonis-Pontchartrain-Sparta-Pygmalion then guess what? Early voting starts TOMORROW!!!

Silence Is Violence to Host Mayoral Forum

I received this email today from Silence is Violence:

January 8, 2010

Mayoral forums are multiplying across the city. At an early forum at Xavier University, virtually every candidate identified crime as the number one priority for the new mayor. Yet even during a recent forum at UNO that planned to address public safety and health, only one question focused on combating crime in the city.

It is difficult to address broad concerns in a limited time frame, but given the public consensus about the centrality of public safety in this election, we feel the discussion about crime must become more substantial. SilenceIsViolence regards it as our responsibility to hold the mayoral candidates to a more concrete and thorough conversation about their specific ideas and proposals for making us safer. We have invited all major candidates to take part in a Martin Luther King Day forum, moderated by Lee Zurik, on crime and public safety. Join us on Monday, January 18 at 7pm to hear their ideas and proposals. The forum will be held in an area of the Upper Ninth Ward in desperate need of attention and revitalization, at the corner of St. Claude Avenue and Louisa Street.

Monday, January 18, 7pm:

Mayoral candidiates forum: “Crime, Community, and the Office of the Mayor”
Hosted by SilenceIsViolence, the Social Aid and Pleasure Club Task Force, and the Stooges Brass Band
Goody’s Restaurant, 3200 St. Claude Ave., (504) 470-9000

When *Katrina* Happened???

I’m with Editilla on Leslie Jacobs’ first ad in her bid for mayor. Showing flood ravaged Canal Street while starting off, “When Katrina happened…” tells me one of two things:
1. Her media consultant isn’t from New Orleans
or
2. Her media consultant and she are out of touch with the locals. What happened here on August 29, 2005 wasn’t “Katrina” – it was “The Federal Flood”. I’m not splitting hairs here….this is an important distinction to New Orleanians who lost jobs, homes and loved ones to the fetid flood waters.

If she wants to be Mayor of New Orleans she might want to rethink her approach. Dig it.
